We previously spoke to Senior Sergeant Adrian Rieck about the new roadside drug testing technology that is now available for all Charleville police to use.
This technology means Police can stop and drug test you anywhere at anytime.
Senior Sergeant Rieck says the recent figures from the roadside drug testing show how effective this technology is in catching drug drivers.
“It’s a double edged sword, it’s been going very well. Since the start of the year we’ve had 19 positive interceptions in relation to road side drug testing, or people who are driving under the influence of an illicit drug in a motor vehicle,”
“Since the new technology that rolled out so every police officer can now test for drugs, in the last two weeks we’ve had 8 positive tests,” he says.
Senior Sergean Rieck says Police have a methodology on how they go about drug testing motorists in Charleville.
“We will be intercepting people and testing them to see if they are under the influence of drugs. And by that, it’s not the same as random breath testing where we’ll pull over every single person that we see,”
“Police have a methodology in the way that we do our things, and we may be targeting drivers or we may be doing certain activities that come within the gambit of what we do,” he says.
Senior Sergeant Rieck says these high numbers are disappointing.
“It’s not a good thing when we are intercepting people that are going positive for drugs. Driving under the influence of an illicit drug is just as bad as driving under the influence of alcohol,” he says.
We will have a full report of how the roadside drug testing is going for our local police in the next few weeks.
