A new system is being trialled at Pathology Queensland’s Charleville lab meaning patients will only have to wait an hour for certain blood test results.
Thyroid, iron and cholesterol tests are three tests being trialled, and it’s all thanks to state-of-the-art testing equipment which has improved lab processes.
In the past, patients could wait up to 24 hours for results because blood tests would be couriered to Toowoomba for analysis before being returned back to Charleville.
Hospital in-patients will also benefit from the faster turnaround.
Supervising scientists of the Charleville laboratory, Shay Bosworth, says GPs are taking advantage of the new local service.
“The previous supervising scientist, Neil Dawson, advocated for and worked tirelessly to provide the groundwork for the expansion of the testing profile,” Mr Bosworth said.
“It’s a tribute to him that it has come to fruition.
“Our laboratory has a highly-qualified professional team working closely with the medical staff both here in Charleville and surrounding districts to provide timely, accurate pathology results to ensure best possible diagnosis and treatment of patients.”
For locals, this is a positive addition to health services, with patients who live out of town now able to get their results and set up a treatment plan with their doctor, all on the same day.
There are three staff members working in the laboratory, and it offers a 24-hour call service throughout the year.
