It’s April Falls Month down at Healthy Ageing – you might be able to tell by all the extra signage around and that quirky song that they’re all singing.
Of course the group are having fun with it but there is a serious message behind the month; let’s reduce slips, trips and falls.
“The idea is to swap an old, warn pair of unsafe slipper and receive a pair of firm fitting safe slipper,” says Annie Liston, Healthy Ageing Coordinator.
“The Occupational Therapist sizes them up for what slipper they need and we also have their blood pressure and things like that done while they’re here, so that we’re targeting a couple of things.
Residents in Charleville, Augathella, Morven and Cunnamulla will be the focus group for this years slipper drive.
With the majority of falls are preventable and predictable, this QLD Health initiative is a positive way of educating older people on how simple lifestyle changes can make a huge difference.
“I see over in the box, that there are some very, very naughty unsafe slippers,” says Annie.
“We want to prevent any falls that we can, and if swapping someones slippers does that, then it’s a bonus.”
It sounds like Charleville locals are well on their way to making slips, trips and falls a thing of the past.
And in a very comfy way!
