Telehealth – we’ve gotten our heads around that but now we’ve got Telepharmacy.
It’s being used to overcome the tyranny of distance for South West Hospital and Health Service patients requiring medication and prescriptions reviews.
Patients in need of a medication review can visit their local health facility and video-conference with a pharmacist at their nearest hospital pharmacy, whether at Charleville, Roma or St George.
Charleville Hospital Pharmacist Mitchell Rigby says telepharmacy was ideal for patients who had been recently hospitalized or were taking more than four medications.
“I’m passionate about the telepharmacy model because it gives patients without a pharmacist available locally the opportunity to have their medication reviewed without having to travel.”
“Some patients have not had a review for years and I feel, as pharmacists, we can make a difference in making their medication regime, and therefore their life, easier. We can also assist prescribing clinicians in de-prescribing any unnecessary medications.”
Mr Rigby says communities throughout the South West had embraced telepharmacy, with at least 10 consultations taking placing in the last month and many more already scheduled for coming weeks in Charleville alone.
Jodie Turvey, Clinical Nurse Consultant Telehealth Services, says telepharmacy was invaluable for patients in the South West with no access to a pharmacist in their town.
“It’s an innovative way of providing health care, as patients can speak directly with the pharmacist and the stress of travel is eliminated.”
“Telehealth has been well-received by both patients and clinicians in the South West, as it is a very effective and time saving way to access care when a face-to-face appointment isn’t available nearby.”
“If you feel you may benefit from a telepharmacy review, please contact your health care provider for a referral.”
